Andrew Ross portraitThe relationship between the subject and the spectator is where the true expression of creativity lies. My current body of work is based on the idea of shared life experiences. I am exploring how a personal experience of one person can manifest itself in a very similar way in another person’s life.

The piece entitled, Salvation? is based on my experience of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, as well as my childhood and the anticipation of my fathers return. The Untitled series delves in to our mortality and the questions that arise when examining our own near death experiences. The death of a close loved one, a friend, a brother, is addressed in the piece entitled, Loving Someone is Watching Them Die. This piece examines the emotions felt by someone who is left confused and angry, and the emptiness that is becoming clearer. Family is another subject of interest, as I attempt to understand the interactions and relationships that are formed amongst family members.

By using my own life experiences as a departure point for my work, I strive to create an open dialogue with the viewer. I have chosen to use photography and sculptural elements in my work as the primary mediums to create a visual representation of these experiences. Photography acts to create an index of a moment passing or a document of an event, while the sculptural elements provide a tactile and organic aspect to my work. The mediums and subject matter that I choose to use is ultimately dependant on the viewer’s interaction with the work. This interaction is the final element that completes each piece of art that I create.
